Retrocausality Layout
Experimental typographic layout for the Retrocausality chapter from Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. Retrocausality is a philosophical thought experiment involving reverse causality, where an effect occurs before its cause. In a non-chronological world, the future can affect the present, and the present can influence the past. This results in a chaotic and illogical realm where anything can occur. A woman can randomly feel happy in a retrocausal world, and then days later, she meets a man and falls in love. The connection between the two events is unclear, as the future and past are entwined. Ultimately, suppose the relationship between past, present, and future is indeterminate. In that case, we can view moments as islands of time, to be judged on its own, and not as a cause or consequence of other events.
